The risk of dam failure and a resulting flood is a real one. There are more than 2,400 dams in Virginia and over one-third of them pose 'high' or 'significant' hazard to property. Most of your clients don't know that dam break inundation zones are not shown on the flood maps prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Property owners directly downstream of a dam can be exposed to serious flood risk in the event of a dam failure or misoperation of the dam. Get a dam inundation certificate to find out if your client's property is in a dam break inundation zone. Help your client make an informed decision on whether or not to purchase flood insurance to keep their family and possessions protected.
